The School of Education at SUNY Oswego was established in 1861 by Edward Austin Sheldon.  He promoted a method of hands-on learning that became the pedagogical foundation for what is now Technology Education and other programs at SUNY Oswego that emphasize authentic learning and field experiences, including Childhood, Adolescence, and Vocational Education.

Today, the School of Education consists of about 65 full-time faculty in six departments offering these and other programs, including Educational Administration, Literacy, Childhood Special Education, Art Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), School Counseling, School Psychology, Human Services/Counseling, Wellness Management, Technology Management, and Industrial Training & Development.
