Recent equipment acquisitions allow the undergraduate physics major to use state of the art instrumentation and techniques. Members of the physics faculty operate two major experimental research facilities; a low energy nuclear laboratory and a cryogenics laboratory. The equipment in the nuclear laboratory includes a 2 MV Van de Graaff accelerator, two scattering chambers, multichannel analyzers, coincidence equipment and numerous detection systems. The cryogenics laboratory is equipped with a helium-3 refrigerator, a vibrating sample magnetometer and extensive low-level signal recovery electronics.
Undergraduate physics majors assist with original research projects in these laboratories as part of their instructional program and thereby gain valuable practical experiences which serve them well after graduation. Other undergraduate laboratories include electronics, optics, modern physics, and electrical measurements. In addition, the Department operates a machine shop to service these facilities.
